The garden memorial containing the ashes of Trotsky and his wife Natalia. This is the house where Leon Trotsky and his wife Natalia Sedova lived from 1939 until 1940. Trotsky, after being exiled from the Soviet Union in 1929, was put under a death sentence by Stalin. Through the efforts of Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo, Trotsky was granted political asylum in Mexico in 1937. He and his wife lived at first in the home of Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo, in the artistic neighborhood of Coyoacan. After a falling out with Diego Rivera over either an affair with Diego's wife Frida, or political views, Trotsky moved into this complex, in the same neighborhood. In May of 1940 there was an assassination attempt, led by the painter David Siqueiros, a Stalinist. The attempt was unsuccessful. Trotsky was murdered there later that year, by a Stalin supporter, Ramon Mercader. The museum has exhibition halls of memorabilia pertaining to Trotsky's stay in Mexico. There is the documentation of his assassination. The living quarters of the Trotskys is on display, along with the garden and a memorial containing the ashes of Trotsky and his wife.
