The Luxor obelisk and fountain in Place de la Concorde with palaces, Rue Royale, and Church of the Madeleine in the background photographed by Charles Soulier, 1865. The Luxor Obelisk is a 75 foot high Egyptian obelisk originally located at the entrance to Luxor Temple, in Egypt. It is decorated with hieroglyphs exalting the reign of the king Ramses II. The first object built in the Obelisk's current spot was a guillotine, the Place de la Revolution. It was built in 1793 that replaced a bronze statue of Louis XVI. It was renamed and became the main execution spot of the counter revolutionaries. In 1833, after the revolution was over the guillotine was removed and replaced with the Obelisk. The Obelisk is a symbol of peace, ending the revolution. The Obelisk was a gift from the Viceroy of Egypt.
