This $10 Australian banknote was the first banknote to be printed on a non-fibrous polymer substrate. It incorporated a Diffractive Optically Variable Device (DOVD), which featured Captain Cook. One side of the first polymer features an Aboriginal youth, a Morning Star Pole and other designs from Aboriginal art. The other side features the HMS Supply, the first ship to drop anchor in Sydney Cove, and a medley of persons symbolizing all who have contributed to Australia's development since 1788. Australia has been responsible for developing the "plastic" banknote, which while referred to as plastic is a polymer substance which moves like paper but has the durability of plastic. It is difficult to counterfeit and lasts much longer in circulation than paper notes. It has been so successful that all Australia's banknotes, like its neighbor New Zealand's are all "plastic".
