Patients with goiter, a nutrition-deficiency disease which causes the thyroid gland to swell, await medical examination in a village in the Asuncion region of Paraguay. The introduction of iodized salt has eliminated the disease in most parts of the world; however, as of 2007 the WHO reported that nearly 2 billion people still have insufficient iodine intake.
