"A new method of macarony making, as practiced at Boston in North America." This illustration depicts two American revolutionaries tarring and feathering a tax collector under the gallows. Tarring and feathering is a form of public humiliation used to enforce unofficial justice or revenge. It was used in feudal Europe and its colonies in the early modern period, as well as the early American frontier, mostly as a type of mob vengeance. Lithograph by Pendleton, 1830, after print published in London in 1774.
