When the Medicare Bill was finally approved by Congress during President Johnson's administration, there was an initial sign-up period for those already 65 or older. If a person didn't sign up during this time they would never be able to do so. It was critical to get the word back into the isolated mountain coves so none would be forever excluded. In Madison County, north of Asheville, Medicare worker Mrs. Gladys Brown heads into areas where roads were poor, or could not be reached by car.
