Selman Waksman (left) talking to Sir Alexander Fleming (right) and Randolph T. Major (standing). Fleming (1881-1955) won the the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1945 for the discovery of penicillin. Waksman (1888-1973) won the same prize in 1952 for the discovery of streptomycin. Major, an organic chemist, was the Director of Research and Development at Merck and Company for 26 years.
