Lister's antiseptic spray in action during surgery. Sir Joseph Lister (1827-1912) was a British surgeon who pioneered antiseptic surgery. He reduced infection by using sterile sprays at the Glasgow Royal Infirmary and later introduced carbolic acid (now known as phenol) to sterilize surgical instruments and clean wounds.
