A case of dancing mania on a pilgrimage to the church at Molenbeeck-Saint Jacques in Luxembourg. An engraving by Hendrick Hondius (1642) after a drawing by Pieter Brueghel the Elder (1564). Brueghel supposedly witnessed an outbreak of dancing mania in 1564 in Flanders. In the 16th century, there were frequent cases of "dancing mania," in which many people took to dancing for days without rest; some even died from strokes and heart attacks.
