Color woodblock print entitled: "The Great Conference on the Conquest of Korea" by Tsukioka Yoshitoshi (1839-1892) Japanese art, 19th century. In the late 16th century the Japanese, under the command of Toyotomi Hideyoshi, invaded Korea. In 1592 Japanese forces captured and occupied Seoul, which had been the capital of Joseon Dynasty in Korea. The Japanese commanders held a war council to determine targets of subjugation called Hachidokuniwari. They divided Korea into eight routes each governed by a corps of their Army. In 1598 the Japanese were finally defeated by a Righteous army, Admiral Yi Sun-sin and assistance from Ming China. This war also saw the rise of the career of Admiral Yi Sun-sin with the "turtle ship". Japanese warriors brought back to Japan as war trophies an estimated 100,000 - 200,000 noses cut from Korean victims.
