Two views of a female trachoma patient: on left her eyes are closed, on right she is attempting to open her eyes with her hands. Trachoma is a chronic contagious disease of the eye characterized by inflammation of the conjunctiva and cornea and the formation of scar tissue, caused by infection with the bacterium Chlamydia trachomatis. Pannus is an abnormal vascular thickening of the cornea. It occurs most often in conjunction with trachoma. Keratitis is an inflammation of the cornea.
