The Alchemist, 1663. An oil painting by Cornelis Bega (Dutch, c. 1631-1664). Alchemy was the pseudo-scientific predecessor of chemistry, popular in medieval times. By the 1600s, it had fallen in stature and was no longer considered a respectable scientific pursuit. Here the painter is ridiculing an alchemist's search for the formula that would turn base metals into gold.
