Saint George and the Dragon, an illumination from c.1450 by Master of Guillebert de Mets (Flemish, active about 1410-1450). Saint George (c. 275/281 - 303) was born in Lydda in what is now Israel and was a soldier in the Roman army. He was later venerated as a Christian martyr. In hagiography, he is one of the most important saints and immortalized in the tale of Saint George and the Dragon. This episode was a legend brought back with the Crusaders and retold in the genre of Romance. In this miniature, Saint George rescues a princess from a dragon, while, in the border, her parents (a pagan king and queen, ready to convert to Christianity) watch from a castle tower.
