Optics: camera obscura (top) and a Leeuwenhoek-style microscope (below). Engraving by Robert Benard [after Lucotte]. At the bottom left is a Culpeper-style microscope. Edward Culpeper (1670-1737) was a mathematical instrument maker based in London and developed this microscope in the 1720s. It has a tripod stand and a concave mirror at the base, allowing for light to be reflected and concentrated directly onto the object being observed.
