In 1868, Americans Zadoc Dederick and Isaac Grass built a human-like steam-powered robot to pull carriages. It became known as the Newark Steam Man. This steam-powered creature was intended to pull loads that would "tax the strength of three draught horses" and was dressed like a man so as not frighten horses. Dederick hoped to create hundreds of such steam men but the patented invention was abandoned.
