In Hindu mythology and scriptures, Arun獺 or Aru is a personification of the reddish glow of the rising Sun, which is believed to have spiritual powers. The presence of Arun獺, the coming of day, is invoked in Hindu prayers to Surya. Arun獺 is sometimes considered a part of Surya, as he is the vision and driving force behind its path through the sky. In some stories, Arun獺 drives the chariot of Surya, while in others, he is a manifestation of Surya, serving as a sign of the coming of the Sun. Surya is one of the five deities considered as equivalent aspects and means to realizing Brahman in the Smarta Tradition. In medieval Hinduism, Surya is also an epithet for the major Hindu gods Shiva and Vishnu. In some ancient texts and arts, Surya is presented syncretically with Indra, Ganesha or others. Surya as a deity is also found in the arts and literature of Buddhism and Jainism. Surya is one of the nine heavenly houses (Navagraha) in the zodiac system of Hindu astrology.
