Light micrograph (LM) of acute alcoholic hepatitis of the liver. Heavy consumption of alcohol can cause acute and chronic hepatitis that can range from a mild hepatitis to severe liver dysfunction with jaundice (yellow skin), neurological dysfunction, fluid in the abdomen, bleeding veins in the esophagus, abnormal blood clotting and coma. Alcoholic hepatitis can lead to liver scarring and cirrhosis, and frequently occurs in alcoholics who already have cirrhosis of the liver. Alcoholic hepatitis is reversible if the patient stops drinking.
