Color-enhanced transmission electron micrograph of a longitudinal section of the spectacularly large Golgi body characteristic of euglenoids (this section is from Khawkinea quartana). It consists of roughly 25 cisternae (flat discoid membranous sacks), whereas higher plant and animal Golgi bodies have only a few cisternae. At the base of the stack is the forming face, where new cisternae are constructed from new membrane. At the U-shaped top of the stack is the proliferating face, where whole cisternae peel off, carrying products elsewhere in the cell for metabolism. Vesicles bud from the edges of the cisternae, similarly transporting metabolites and membrane to other cell sites. Unusually, the center of the stack has a structural core of dense material. The cytoplasm (yellow) contains ribosomes and mitochondria (green). Magnification 28,000x when printed at 8" x 10".
