Rocky Mountain spotted fever is a common rickettsial illness in the United States, caused by Rickettsia rickettsii. The bacteria is transmitted to humans by wood ticks (Dermacentor andersoni). Symptoms include fever, headache, muscle pain, and rash. If it is not treated early with antibiotics, the disease can be fatal.
