Tapeworms are parasitic flatworms that form the class Cestoda. All tapeworms are parasitic in the intestines of humans and other vertebrates, spending the adult phase of their lives in the guts of a vertebrate animal, known as a primary host. Most tapeworms also spend part of their life cycle in the tissues of one or more other animals, called intermediate hosts. This light micrograph is of Taenia scolex.
