Light microscopic image of the stratum spinosum layer of the edipermis. The stratum spinosum consists of cubodial cells that sit directly beneath the stratum granulosum and above the stratum basale. These cells are connected by desmosomes (intercellular bridges) giving them a prickly or spiny appearance. In this layer the cells start to synthesize keratin.
