Transmission electron micrograph of desmosomes in glial cells in the nerve cord of the annelid worm (Aphrodite aculeata). Desmosomes in invertebrates such as this are slightly different from those in vertebrate animals. This is thought to be due to the greater mechanical stress on the central nervous system of these animals while they propel themselves.
