Transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of infective particle of polio virus. The icosahedral capsids of protein contain RNA; these lie within an outer envelope composed of protein and lipid. This envelope "recognizes" the cell membrane of a susceptible host cell, fuses with it and empties the capsids into the host. Magnification: x60,000.
