Freshwater diatoms of various species are eating a Sugar Maple Leaf (Acer saccharum). This community was collected in a freshwater stream in New York State in the fall. Diatoms are a major decomposer in the cooler temperatures of fall. The magnification is x200 when printed 10 cm wide.
