SEM (Scanning Electron Micrograph) of the surface of a hop flower (Humulus lupulus). The thorn structures are designed to detour predators from eating the flower. These modified trichome structures also make the plant difficult to handle. The round sacks on the flower are filled with the chemicals that give hops its characteristic smell. This image was collected at 169x and represents a field of view of 8mm in the horizontal direction.
