This scanning electron micrograph (SEM) shows the Anopheles gambiae mosquito. This particular species consists of a complex of seven sub-species of mosquito. Although they are morphologically indistinguishable they do appear to have different behavioral traits and feeding habits. The species is thought to be the principal vector of malaria in Africa. However, it should be noted that it is only the female that transmits the parasites, which causes the disease. Supplied by Kevin Mackenzie, courtesy of Wellcome Images.
