This is a scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a male gametocyte of Plasmodium yoelii (a malaria causing parasite) at the moment of exflagellation (formation of microgametes). The slight swelling at the head of the flagellum and the bulge along its length where the male nucleus is attached are easy to see in the flagellum on the left.
