Young Prosopis tamarugo growing through cracks in the parched earth of the Atacama Desert in Chile, one of world's driest deserts. Prosopis tamarugo is a multistemmed tree superbly adapted to saline soil. Once almost wiped out though over-exploitation, the Tamaruga forests are successfully being nursed back by the Chilean Forest Service. Pampa del Tamarugal National Rerserve consists of 23 hectares of man-made forests and 4500 ha of natural forests.
