Pea (Pisum sativum) seedling recently germinated. The radicle has emerged from the seed coat and is now visible as the primary root. The primary root merges into the hypocotyl (stem below the cotyledons). In soil the root would grow down while the hypocotyl would lift the cotyledons, still inside the seedcoat, above the ground and the shoot would grow upward.
