Welwitschia mirabilis, a primeval plant resembling a woody carrot, endemic to southwest Africa. Welwitschia is a hearty plant: not only is it capable of surviving in harsh desert environments, it is extremely long-lived, with lifespans of over 1,000 years. It is considered a living fossil, having no close living relatives and resembling species known from fossils.
