When blooming in the spring, pines produce large quantities of airborne pollen in the yellow male blossoms. The pollen is allergenic to some people. Each grain has two minute air sacks which increase its buoyancy similar to pollen of other coniferous trees. This kind of pollen was found even in the stratosphere, so it can travel very far from its original source. Female blossoms will develop into pine cones.
