The bromeliad Aechmea zebrina in bloom. Bromeliads are members of the pineapple family. Many species, such as this one are epiphytic in nature, attaching themselves to the branches of trees. They are not parasites and only use the trees for support. Their leaves form a cup which serves as a reservoir for rain water. Bromeliads are popular houseplants. Photographed in the Peruvian Amazon.
