Pinyon Pine (Pinus monophylla) and California Juniper (Juniperus californica), Lockwood Valley, California. Much of the arid southwestern U.S. is covered with this combination (or related species). These trees are adapted to long, hot summers, cold winters and little annual precipitation. In the foreground is the third common constituent of this habitat, Great Basin Sagebrush (Artemisia tridentata). This plant community is called Pinyon-Juniper Woodland, or P-J for short.
