Hairless rat. Hairless rat (Rattus norvegicus), used as a model in the study of human diseases. This bald variety of the white laboratory rat arose as a genetic 'mistake' but was subsequently maintained by selective breeding. It does not occur in the wild. The hairless rat has become widely used in both medical and cosmetic research. It is also popular in the pet industry.
