Volvox alga. Light micrograph of Volvox sp., a colony of green algae, with an asexual daughter colony forming at upper right. Volvox lies between the plant and animal kingdoms, sometimes being classified as a flagellate animal. The colony contains from hundreds to thousands of cells arranged at the surface of a watery matrix. The individual cells have two flagella and eyespots. They reproduce both asexually and sexually. In the former case, cells in the rear of the colony divide to form daughter colonies. Once released, the parent colony dies. In the latter case, male & female gametes are produced & a sexual union occurs. Magnification: x100 at 35mm size.
