Bioglass teeth are splinted in the mouth of a female baboon during a two-year dental research experiment at the University of Florida. The baboon (fully anesthetized) will receive 2-4 bioglass teeth and a "control" or "controls" of dental plastic or metal. Bioglass, so named because it forms a direct chemical bond with bone, permits a tooth to actually "grow" into tissues of jaw and root permanently. The tooth is freestanding and requires no extraction of adjacent teeth to anchor it. Research may mean new hope for partial denture wearers.
