X-ray of a common oak tree gall (Quercus sp.). These galls are sometimes called Oak-apples. A gall is an abnormal growth or swelling formed by a plant as a result of an attack by parasites such as bacteria, fungi, nematodes, insects or mites. This kind is caused by the larvae of parasitic wasps. Oak-apples are valued for the high-content of tannin within them.
