This axial (cross sectional) CT image, through the pelvis, shows the typical appearance of diverticulosis. Numerous small outpouchings of the sigmoid colon are seen, some of which contain air, some with oral contrast (white) and some with a mixture of air, oral contrast (looks white) and stool (looks gray). When there is no inflammation/infection associated with this appearance the condition is called diverticulosis. When a diverticulum ruptures and there is associated inflammation/infection in and adjacent to the abnormal bowel the condition is then called diverticulitis.
