Multi-mode optical fiber terminated with an SMA-type connector. Termination of an optical fiber with a fiberoptic connector allows for fibers to be easily connected and disconnected with minimal excess loss. The standard SMA-type connector shown here is derived from an SMA (SubMiniature version A) connector used in RF electronics. Optical SMA connector is popular with multi-mode fibers used in datacom, telecommunications and fiber lasers.
