Newton Rings is an interference pattern between a spherical and a plane wavefronts. Such wavefronts can be obtained in practice by reflecting a collimated beam from nearby spherical and plane surfaces. When observed in monochromatic light, the pattern is a series of concentric dark and light rings (fringes). Shown here are Newton Rings obtained by reflecting a semiconductor laser beam from a plano-convex lens as observed on a screen. Characteristic laser speckle pattern is apparent. The speckle results from light scattering by (microscopic) rough texture of the screen
