Gravitropism in a sunflower, Helianthus annuus, seedling. Gravitropism (sometimes referred to as geotropism) is a plant response to earth's gravitational field. Plant stems (shoots) exhibit negative gravitropism because they respond by growing away from the gravitational attraction. This plant will show a turn in its stem which occurs after its pot is tipped over. Image 1 in a sequence of 4.
