A 1976 US half dollar was placed on the surface of agar gel inoculated with fecal bacteria. The bacteria propagated throughout the agar gel except under the half dollar. For this photograph, the coin was moved to the left to reveal its bactericidal effect. The light spots indicate bacterial colonies inside the agar gel and on its surface.
