A molecular model of leptin, a peptide hormone produced primarily by white adipose tissue, which regulates hunger and metabolism. Leptin provides the feeling of satiety after a meal to inhibit appetite over a long period of time. Leptin counteracts feeding stimulants secreted into the blood while also promoting the synthesis of appetite suppressants. Individuals suffering from obesity or type 2 diabetes can develop a resistance to leptin, and as a result, the body never gains a feeling of satiety after eating.
