A molecular surface model of the Hepatitis E virus (HEV), a single-stranded RNA virus transmitted mainly through fecal contamination of food or water, and results in inflammation of the liver, jaundice, fever or nausea. Hepatitis E is more prevalent in warmer climates or developing countries with poor sanitation. Large scale epidemics have been reported in Asia, the Middle East, Africa and Central America. Adequate human waste disposal, water treatments and improved sanitation are the best methods of prevention, and most individuals can recover from Hepatitis E on their own.
