FDA mobile lab analysts working at the border crossing test produce samples for Salmonella and E. coli. Mobile laboratories help FDA quickly test food and drugs for contaminants. Salmonella is closely related to the Escherichia genus and are found worldwide in cold- and warm-blooded animals (including humans), and in the environment. Salmonella bacteria, is a common cause of food-borne disease. They enter the digestive tract of humans and other mammals in contaminated food and cause abdominal pains and violent diarrhea. When not deployed, the mobile labs are stationed at FDA's Jefferson, Arkansas Regional Laboratory.
