Iron (II), cobalt (II) and copper (II) hydroxide precipitates formed by adding few drops of a 1M solution of sodium hydroxide (NaOH) to 0.2 M solutions containing metal salts. Left to right: (1) iron (II) hydroxide (Fe(OH)2), FeSO4 + NaOH -> Fe(OH)2 + Na2SO4; (2) cobalt hydroxide (Co(OH)2, CoCl2 + NaOH -> Co(OH)2 + NaCl; (3) copper (II) hydroxide (Cu(OH)2), CuCl2 + NaOH -> Cu(OH)2 + NaCl. These are examples of a double replacement reaction.
