Plant geneticist introduces acyltransferase genes from the tung tree (Vernicia fordii) into the genome of Arabidopsis thaliana. The foreign DNA is transferred by dipping the plants' flowers into a sucrose solution containing the bacterium Agrobacterium tumefaciens. The bacterial cells then carry plasmids bearing the tung genes and other important regulatory DNA elements into the genome of A. thaliana. The objective is to endow conventional plants with the ability to make tung oil.
