Potassium permanganate (KMnO4) is a strong oxidizing agent and is reduced when it reacts. In this sequence a 3% solution of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) in a pipette is added to a beaker containing potassium permanganate solution (~10^-3M). First, at far left, violet Mn7+ is reduced to brown Mn4+ (MnO2). As more hydrogen peroxide is added, Mn4+ is reduced further to nearly colorless Mn2+ (noted color changes from left to right). Some oxygen bubbles (O2) are also produced as a result of MnO2 acting as a catalyst for H2O2 decomposition.
