Citric acid and baking soda. When solid citric acid (C6H8O7) and baking soda (sodium bicarbonate, NaHCO3) are mixed together no reaction occurs (left frame). When the mixture is poured into water, the chemicals get dissolved and the reaction proceeds vigorously, releasing carbon dioxide gas: H3C6H5O7(aq) + NaHCO3(aq) -> Na3C6H5O7(aq) + CO2(g) + H2O(l) (right frame). Baking soda and citric acid are among main ingredients of Alka-Setzer tablets.
