A lighted candle sits in a dish of water with red food coloring. As the graduated cylinder is lowered, the air in the cylinder heats up from the flame and expands. When the graduated cylinder is completely lowered over the burning candle, the combustion reaction will cease once it runs out of oxygen. Once the flame goes out, the air in the cylinder will cool and contract. Since the mouth of the cylinder is under water, it will pull water up the cylinder.
